So I decided to take a cake decorating class at Jo~Anns the other day! I have never really done anything like this before and it was fun. It was a 4 day class. (not 4 days in a row. The classes were spread out over 2 weeks. Which worked out great!) I was not able to attend the very first class. We had some other things going on. Anyway here is what I did in the classes!
First we had to make our own cakes. I didn't read the directions very well and my first batch of cakes flopped. They were a mess when they came out of the oven. This was not a great start to my new found hobby!
Then I read the directions more carefully and it was amazing how nice the cakes turned out! Then we had a recipe to make our own frosting. The frosting turned out good. I just wish I had the talent that Grandma Paxman has. Her cakes and pastries were to die for!!
Anyway, I took the cakes to class and the teacher showed us how to put filling in the middle if we wanted to (I didn't want to cause the kids wont eat the cake if there is filling in the middle) Then the next step was to frost our cake. She showed us a cool way to quickly frost the cake. Then we mixed our own colors in our frosting to decorate our cake.
The instructor showed us a few examples of different decorated cakes. So I choose to decorate mine with a fish on it! It was a lot of fun and it really was not all that hard.
When I got home that night from the class the whole neighborhood was over so I fed them each a piece of cake. By then the hole thing was gone. I was so glad. I really didn't want that cake hanging around the house. I really don't need to eat it and I know I would be tempted to have several pieces.
Class #3
Anyway, our next class we were asked to make a dozen cupcakes. This time the instructor wanted us to fill them with a filling. So I decided to make chocolate cup cakes and use lemon filling. (Yea the boys wont eat anything with filling in them so I just filled 3 of the cupcakes.) I thought that putting a filling into the cake or even the cupcakes was going to be a hard thing, but it really was not hard at all. Then it was time to decorate them.
The teacher showed us a few different ways on how to make some flowers. So I practiced on a few of my cupcakes. Decorating cupcakes were lots of fun to.
So the neighbor kids got wind that I was at another cake decorating class. So again they were waiting close to the house for when I came home to have a cupcake. And I was so glad to let them eat them all. I knew that I had another class in a couple of days where I was to make another cake to decorate.
Class #4
So for class #4 we were to bake another cake and make frosting. Then we had to fill it if we wanted to and then frost it before the next class. So I did just that. I was excited for this class. The teacher taught us how to make roses with our frosting. Roses are a little bit tricky to make but I feel I did good. Its amazing what kind of things you can do with frosting and how it changes the look of your cake.I feel that I have learned so much already but there is so much to decorating cakes or cupcakes.
So this is how my final cake turned out!
I am so glad that I took this class. It was so much fun. Now I am not going to use this cake decorating class as a money maker. I just wanted to learn how to do this to use it as a hobby. I love eat sweets. So now I know how to make my sweets even sweeter.
(although I have found when I make sweets I really don't want to eat them. So that's a great way to curve that sweet tooth appetite)
and here's my certificate for completing course #1
So I really enjoyed taking Course 1 so I signed myself up for Course 2. Its not til October but that's OK.
